Pannenkoeken

"Ik ben dol op pannenkoeken."

Ik ben dol is one of Funky Monkey's favourite phrases at the moment. Learnt from one of those annoying tv programmes Nihao Kailan, it means I am crazy about......

So Ik ben dol op Pannenkoken, I am crazy about Pancakes. Savoury ones are my favourite but any will do really. I mean how clever is a Pancake!, If you think about it, it could be a whole meal served as one item on your plate, (sounds like my coking in general)
.As Domestic Goddess said "It is a great way to get fruit into your children or possibly even vegetables for that matter!.
My favourite  panckae: Mozarella, pesto and tomato
The lovely Domestic Goddess (who I cyberworlded with when we were both pregnant, long before my blogging) has a Pancake Linky  this week for Pancake day.
In the Netherlands, Pancake day isn't just a one day a year event. the cheap humble pancake is part of  culinary culture and seen as a legitimate meal, doesn't matter if they're sweet or savory, hot or cold.
Pancakes are traditionally eaten for dinner — in the evening.  It’s a special meal for children, and normally it’s the dad’s job to bake them. There are many  different ways to eat the pancakes: plain with powdered sugar (icing sugar), jam or sr syrup, with slices o apple, or  eat the savory variety with thin slices or bacon (still eaten with syrup!) or melted cheese.

A dutch  pannenkoek; very large and typically almost wafer-thin. Every thing goes as to what can go on and in it!
Poffertjes are another Dutch pancake-type dish. They are like American pancakes somewhat, but are sweeter, and very small. They require a specially dimpled pan, preferably in copper. The technique used also varies; they are flipped repeatedly before a side is completely done, in order to attain a softer interior.
In one area of the Netherrlands called Overijssel they have aardappelpannenkoek, Pancakes made with grated potatoes,

They  have a national pancake day in Holland too. It's the 3rd of April this year. Schools get free ingredients to bake pancakes by signing up and bake pancakes for the elderly ,patients in hospitals etc.

Special pancake restaurants are very popular family restaurants and serve many varieties of sweet, savory, and stuffed pancakes.
Some of them actually cook the pancakes while you watch and they all have playparks, some even are linked to a farm, So it makes a really fun family day out.

When I saw the link over @ Domestic Goddessq, it was such a coincendence as we went to one of the Pannenkoekhouses today. My Dutchie husband ate one with  ham and cheese, and  then proceed to pour schenkstroop all over it. I thought it was like maple syrup but it doesn't taste like it at all, it's a cross between golden syrup and black treacle. He  then added  poeder suiker (icing sugar) Yum?!.
I kept a bit more simple and opted for cherries and cream.
If you are cooking pancakes at home,  Here is a recipe I found.for Dutch pancakes.
For the Poffertjes you could try this recipe, let me know if you need a pan!!!
You could also just cheat and buy the bottles of ready made pannenkoeken mix that they sell in bottles here, just add milk!!
The Dutch even have a song all about Pancakes, Pannenkoek in mijn onderbroek, which means Pancakes in my pants!! I know don't ask!!  This is a typical Carnival song, If you have read my Carnivalling posts you will fully understand why!!!

Oh and if you really havent had enough of pancakes then you must see this blog (Jim's pancakes) where the pancakes are really something!!. Think Domestic Goddessq will love this one!

(Finally apologies for any mistakes spelling or not, I am just in from Carnavalling and you've learnt my motto, if you can't beat them join them)
